usands of children daily is no small task! Join the Rotary Club of Belling
ham on March 14\, 2026 and pack meals for children in need and have a wond
erful time serving with your hands. Our goal is to pack 35\,000 meals in 2
hours. And we need to raise $8\,500 for the materials to make it happen!
Making this possible is only possible through the efforts of partners and
volunteers like you. The meals packed will be sent to Sierra Leone\, provi
ding over 1\,000 students nutritious meals so they can concentrate at scho
ol.  More about Sierra Leone: Sierra Leone\, a lush tropical country on
the west coast of Africa that boasts beautiful beaches\, picturesque mount
ains\, and some of the richest natural resources and mineral deposits (inc
luding diamonds) in the world\, is one of the poorest countries in the wor
ld. It consistently ranks as one of the least developed countries on the U
nited Nations Human Development Index. It also has one of the highest infa
nt mortality rates in the world (children dying before reaching age five).
Coupled with this overwhelming poverty\, from 1991–2001\, Sierra Leone
was embroiled in a devastating civil war in which tens of thousands of peo
ple were killed and an estimated one million people were forced from their
  homes and villages—many raped\, tortured\, and/or drafted into rebel f
orces. The war destroyed much of the country’s infrastructure and has le
ft its lasting scars\, most notably on the children—leaving 320\,000 ch
ildren orphaned. Most people in Sierra Leone live in rural farming communi
ties. A typical family dwelling in a village is a mud-walled home with a d
irt floor and a thatched roof. Cooking is done by outdoor fire. Laundry\,
washing\, and bathing are done in the nearest river or with water hauled f
rom the closest water source. A typical family’s diet consists of rice\,
  cassava root\, and leafy greens.
