Announcements:

Board Briefs from Directors Meeting, July 14, 2014:

SERVICE-ADMIN/FUNDING – PRESIDENT: BRAD BURDICK

Brad led a discussion on his 2014-2015 RCOB Priorities.

 1.  Making meetings fun: Sergeant-at-Arms is now called “Minister of Fun” and will be encouraged to not penalize members for good news.  He would also like to encourage members to do business with Rotarians.
 2.  Increasing membership: Encourage members to bring guests.  We will continue our First Time Guest free mails.  Bring a member and tell Shannon and she will write you down.
 3.  Making Wacky Wickets a big success
 4.  Getting Club members to use ClubRunner

President Brad has assigned members to more committees than usual with the hope that everyone will find a way to get involved and maybe try something new.  Some may find that their personal situation doesn’t allow for participation in every committee.  If that is the case, members can simply notify the committee chair to be removed from the committee.  The new Club Runner program has many great benefits --one of which is easy committee membership management.  Another is quick and easy communication with members of each committee.  Members will be encouraged over the next few weeks to take a moment and get familiar with this new communication system.

Program:

Today's program featured Jason Westlake speaking about "Lessons from the Jungle: Leadership Training in the Amazon".

Jason, a principal in a leadership consulting firm, presented a fascinating program with video from his travels to the Amazon.  His company does leadership training with groups going in to the Amazon to learn various leadership tenets.

During a recent trip Jason discovered an intriguing tool of “centering himself” to prepare for success.  He was introduced to a “Jungle Whisperer” who was noted for bringing clients to various spots to see the animals they have yearned to find.  In Jason’s case he had always wanted to see a Jaguar, which is very difficult to find and actually see.  His lesson, in preparing himself for success, was to act and believe as if he would actually see the sought-after jaguar - and indeed, it came to pass. He talked about how sometimes we get bogged down with the negativity of a current situation.  A leader needs to start seeing the potential, then acting as if it is not only a possibility but a probability, and then build the action plan to make it happen.

The development of the Amazon Basin has driven many small tribes deep into the jungle.  These groups were under threat from the many companies harvesting the natural resources of the Amazon.  No contact with the tribes is possible because the groups have no immunities to the diseases we all carry.  One of the most exciting occurrences of Jason's last trip was the discovery of a previously un-contacted tribe.  Jason wanted to spread the word and share the experience.

Thanks, Jason, for an inspiring demonstration of living your dreams and harnessing your passions to bring success to all we do.
