Opening Welcome:

President Steve opened the meeting noting the good weather.  March is living up to the saying that it comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.

The Paul Harris quote of the week is, “Be grateful for what you have and strive to make a difference.”  Steve said that this quote reminds us that gratitude is the key to contentment.  We should cultivate ambition and the will to improve society for the betterment of others.

Steve noted that Ralph Rinne sent a note thanking the club for its appreciation of him on his 101st birthday in February.  Steve said we hoped to recognize his 102nd next year.
Guests:

George Halsell introduced his wife Melanie

Aaron Booker introduced our speaker, Brett Lovins

Club Events and Committee Announcements
The canteen will be closed again next Monday, but will be open for our April 14 meeting.

The LaConner Rotary Club will have representatives here for our meeting next week to sell tulips.  They will be $7 a bunch, cash, check or credit card.

Felicity and Curtis Dye reserved a hotel room in Calgary for the Rotary International Convention on June 21-25 and they now are unable to attend.  Since rooms are getting hard to find, if anyone is thinking of going to the convention and doesn’t have a room, please contact Felicity if they want to take over their room.

Steve invited any club member interested in chairing a committee to look into other venues for our meeting to contact him.

Committee Announcements:

Roland Trenouth announced that the meal packing event is ready for this coming Saturday, April 5, at 9:15 a.m. at the Assumption Gym.  The club met its goals of participation (106 people are signed up) and money raised (over $13,000).

John Dunne announced on behalf of the Music Committee that, in response to the demand reflected in the club member satisfaction survey, beginning in June the Rotary Brass will play at two meetings a month.  The Committee has heard our members!

Sue Parsons announced that she has been meeting regularly with the new Sehome High School Interact Club, which is an exciting going concern.  They will have at least 6 people at our meal packing event this Saturday.  They want to raise over $1,000 for the Honduras project.  There are opportunities for our members to meet with that club and be the Rotary club member leading their meetings on April 28, May 9 and May 12, in Sue’s absence.  If anyone is interested, please let her know.  Meetings are for half an hour beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Tom Grinstad announced that the third Sunday in July (the 20th) is the Vietnam Vets Car Show.  He hopes for 400 vintage cars to turn out this year, presumably with their owners.  It is free to the public.

BRETT LOVINS

"RECOVERY FRIENDLY WORKPLACE"

Aaron Booker introduced our speaker, Brett Lovins.  Aaron has known Brett for 29 years. Brett lived in Bellingham from 1988 to 2003 and was a musician who played at Aaron’s wedding.

Brett has worked for many years at Cisco Systems. Brett is an alcohol addict.  He has not had any alcohol or drugs since May 28, 2013.  His recovery has led to his forming a consulting company called Sober Serious Consulting.  He spoke to us about his journey.

He described about 15 years ago when he was 21 days into sobriety and attending a Cisco Live conference for work.  He arrived at the host hotel and immediately went to a Greek restaurant when one of his superiors asked everyone to stand on their chairs and drink a glass of ouzo.  This was a seminal moment in his recovery.
Brett decided to tell his recovery story to the health advisors at Cisco.  Cisco was so supportive of him that it is a model employer for what Brett calls the “Recovery Friendly Workplace.”

Brett presented some statistics:  2/3 of families are affected by a substance use disorder; 70% of substance abusers are full time employees; 10% of abusers are severely addicted; 8% are in recovery.

In 2018, New Hampshire Governor John Sununu instituted a statewide Recovery Friendly Workplace program.  In 2023, the Department of Labor produced a workplace booklet supporting the idea.  In the last year or two, a number of other states have joined in.

From 2013 to 2021, Brett enjoyed 8 quiet years in his recovery.  In 2018, he saw a documentary called “The Anonymous People,” which urged recovering addicts not to stay quiet, but to tell their stories to spread the word about healthy recovery.  An author, Brene Brown has urged recovering addicts to “dare to lead.”

Beginning in 2021, Brett told his story to Cisco’s benefits and wellness team.  He gave a talk to the 2022 Mental Health Awareness Week at work.  At that year’s Cisco Live conference, the first item to sell out was the Sober Happy Hour which he organized.

Brett noted that the Recovery Friendly Workplace benefitted the employer in many ways: better productivity by its workforce, less absenteeism, better employee health, saving much money due to less turnover, health claims and related expenses.

Brett has podcasts available through his website (soberseriousconsulting.com) and urged our members to go to his website for more information.

Thank you, Brett, for an interesting and informative presentation.

Closing:

Steve thanked everyone who contributed to the meeting and urged people to help put tables and chairs back.  The meeting adjourned early at 1:25 p.m.
