We havekicked off the second year of our Major Project Fundraising for the Light House Mission Medical Center. Dave Blair reminded us to Please get your pledges in soon.
For our newer members: In order to substantially increase capacity, LHM has been constructing a 75,000 square foot, purposefully built facility, created to be the hub for homeless services in our community.
In addition to shelter, it will offer a multi-service healthcare clinic and welcome community partners to provide medical and dental care. Notable partners include SeaMar Medical Clinic, Opportunity Council, UnityCare, PeaceHealth Hospital, City of Bellingham, and Whatcom County. Bringing these services to our guests onsite will create better healthcare outcomes. This healthcare clinic is the Major Project for last year and this Rotary year for a total goal of $165,000. We are half way there!
Congratulations to George Halsell receiving his PHF+1 and Cathy Buckley receiving her PHF+2. Thanks so much for your contribution to Rotary International.

Jason was born and raised in Bellingham. After graduating from Bellingham High School, Jason went to the University of Washington for undergraduate studies followed by medical school at Ohio State University. He returned to the University of Washington for pathology residency followed by a hematopathology fellowship at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. He worked in private practice in Tacoma for 15 years and is currently a professor of hematopathology in the department of laboratory medicine and pathology at the University of Washington. He’s really into dinosaurs and fossil hunting, and he shared his journey to finding one of the premiere T-rex fossil skeletons in the world.
After med school he started looking for fossils on the coast of Oregon. He found scallops, agatized snails, bones; but discovered that if you want to find dinosaurs you gotta go to Montana. There he went on the beach of Fort Peck Reservoir, where he started finding cephalopods, turtle shells, and marine deposits. However, that area was a former sea (the Cretaceous western interior seaway), so he went looking elsewhere in the Badlands, where the dirt had been washed away. He and his friend overlaid a variety of geological maps and figured out the best places to look. Eventually they found one of the best-preserved highest quality skulls of a 66.3 million years old Tyrannosaurus rex, which was eventually named by the finders, “the Tufts-Love rex.”
Closing: Be reminded to fill out your participation sheets to get to 150 points.
