Club Events and Committee Announcements
Paul Grey Book Review:
Book Review by Paul Grey. ‘Man’s Search For Meaning’ by Viktor Frankl. Paul was recommended this book by his granddaughter, a prison mental health counselor. This book was recommended to me during my undergrad student years.

Paul described the circumstances by which Viktor Frankl arrived at a WWII German concentration camp. Quoting a book review:
“Frankl personally administered morphine to his dying father in this prison camp. During his lengthy imprisonment he dealt with extreme mental challenges, concluding that there are two races of people: the decent and the indecent.

Viktor Frankl survived his interment. He taught the world a lot about freedom and responsibility. Paul ended his talk with by summarizing, “Coming to know the reality of man” reinforced to me who I am as a Rotarian.

This book is a worthy classic for adults.

Major Project 2024-2025 to the Lighthouse Mission Medical Center:

We have kicked off the second year of our Major Project Fundraising for the Light House Mission Medical Center.  Please get your pledges in soon.

For our newer members: In order to substantially increase capacity, LHM has been constructing a 75,000 square foot, purposefully built facility, created to be the hub for homeless services in our community.

In addition to shelter, it will offer a multi-service healthcare clinic and welcome community partners to provide medical and dental care. Notable partners include SeaMar Medical Clinic, Opportunity Council, UnityCare, PeaceHealth Hospital, City of Bellingham, and Whatcom County. Bringing these services to our guests onsite will create better healthcare outcomes.  This healthcare clinic is the Major Project for last year and this Rotary year for a total goal of $165,000.  We are half way there!

MAIN PROGRAM:
Renewable Energy in the Ukrainian Crisis
Paul Shmotolokha
The October 21st program was introduced by John Moffat. The speaker Paul Shmotolokha, who spoke about Renewable Energy needs in war torn Ukraine.

Paul Shmotolokha’s background is deep and complex. As a teenager he participated in Rotary Interact programs in high school. He was a Rotary Ambassador Scholar in 1991 and studied at the Universidad de Chile Institute for International Studies in Santiago, Chile. He was the only USA student among the 22 foreign nationals and Chilean students. I can testify to how this experience would be likely to widen an individual’s perspective on global politics, geography, and culture. My wife studied at the University of Concepcion in Chile.

Another valuable experience in Paul’s life was the time he served as an officer in the US Army. There he was first introduced to tactical solar and gas generators that have restrictions not common to civilian applications. He acquired insight into tactical field power needs. Most of the Ukraine fall into zone requiring tactical power needs. These specific needs mandate no glass, no reflection, and no temperature signatures. The Russians are skilled in using these signatures for target profiles and alignment.

Back home in the USA Paul serves as the CEO of New Use Energy, a high-tech company that produces state-of-the-art mobile solar + battery generator systems. The corporate headquarters is in Phoenix, AZ, but there are field offices in nearby Anacortes. Paul has a background of service with Alpha Tech in Bellingham where he oversaw a division that produced power systems for broadband and telecommunications systems.

His dedication to the needs of Ukraine appear to go beyond making a living. I suspect Paul is right man on the scene. He seems to fall back on the cultural lessons learned as a scholar in Chile, most importantly, learning to view a situation from a non-USA perspective.

As Shmotolokha explained to us, war torn eastern Ukraine is desperate for industrial quality power sources.” Currently 60% of the prewar power generating sources in Ukraine have been destroyed.” Paul shared poignant photos taken of Ukrainian hospital ICUs that had been hit by bombs and cruise missiles. He wants to share these photos and tell their stories. Some of Paul’s work in Ukraine involves the Rotary ‘Power Up’ assist program that seeks to hold infrastructure together. At times critical power needs are as little as 1 km from Russian lines.

It soon became obvious that Paul Shmotolokha is a rare American who can make things happen. His talk sped by in time and was closed altogether too soon. I want to hear more about this ma’s personal mission in life. I also yearn to hear more about these clean, renewable power technologies. No doubt, the same is true of many of you.

Closing

John Moffat concluded with the ticket raffle and then rang the bell.

Chaos resumed.
