Films, Food & Beverage and Silent Auction
Chief organizer Shauna Naf announced that every member of the Club needs to help put on this event if it is going to be successful. She handed out a sheet listing the various necessary tasks and asked each of us to fill one out and return it to her. We already have four sponsors, but need more, as well as items for the Silent Auction. Finally, Shauna showed an amazing trailer of the movies to be shown at the event.
Dennis Williams summarized Doris Goodwin Kearn’s book, “An Unfinished Love Story,” a personal account of the 1960’s compiled from the thousands of manuscripts accumulated by her late husband, who was involved in the administrations of JFK and LBJ as a speech writer and advisor.
Dennis highly recommends the book as a fine remembrance of the 1960's.
The presentation was organized a little like a relay. After Heather gave a general overview and brief history, she handed the mic off to her sidekicks who dove in more deeply to Chuckanut's work.
The Foundation was organized in the 1980’s as the St. Luke's Foundation but changed its name in 2014 to Chuckanut Health Foundation, focusing of community needs that affect health, especially the needs of children. They emphasize stabilizing families, food security and helping every child get a healthy start. The Foundation endeavors to help everyone get the healthcare they need, connecting them to resources as needed. Part of their activity is advocating with civic leaders.
The Foundation has a three-part model for their organization: community informed solutions, rapid response to immediate needs, and health equity. As part of their push for health equity, they highlighted the situation in the Mt. Baker School District, the most sparsely populated area of Whatcom County which has little public transportation and a higher infant mortality rate. They manage the Laurendeau Cancer Care Fund to help defray the cost of expensive cancer care.
Closing:
The Prez asked the presenters to stay afterward for questions and released the membership into the wild.
additional speakers: Shayna Dumont, Shu-Ling Zhao and Kristina Martens
