Nathan Twining rang the bell to open the meeting since both President Steve Ban and President-elect John Moffat were out of town. In keeping with Steve’s effort to teach us a few useful phrases before our Hungarian friends arrive, he taught us the phrase “Why have you abandoned us” to welcome Steve back.

John Dunne gave a book report on “The Rose Code” by Kate Quinn, a historical mystery set in Bletchley Park in 1940-1944 and simultaneously in London and Clockwell Asylum in 1947 during the week before the marriage of Prince Phillip and Princess Elizabeth. John, however did not give us a spoiler – so we have to read the book to solve the mystery.

Steve Cohen. He has been an EMS for more than 40 years and moved to training other EMS after various injuries forced his career change. He has held positions around the country and moved to Whatcom County in 2020. In addition to training EMS, he has also trained various civilian groups, such as corporate groups and libraries, in CPS and the use of Narcan. He explained that opioids present a major risk for addiction because they have been so casually prescribed for post-surgical pain, injuries, and dental work. Fentanyl has become so common because it is cheap and easy to make as well as easy to distribute. Overdoses of opioids are the leading cause of preventable death in the US. Opioids slow breathing and during overdoses the breathing can stop.
He described how to approach someone who appears unconscious but may be sleeping and would not appreciate being awakened. Before administering Narcan, he reminded us to call 911 first. He showed how to administer Narcan intranasally and how it works in the brain. While Narcan is very successful in reversing opioid overdoses, it has no effect on non-opioid medications. Xyaline, a non-opioid, is more potent than fentanyl but it does not respond to Narcan. He had free Narcan to give to members and cautioned them to be aware of the expiration date since Narcan, like other medications, gradually becomes less effective with time. For anyone who needed a replacement, he encouraged us to call him at 360-827-6157.
Closing:
Nathan seems to have a natural affinity for the bell. He seems to strike it at just the right intensity to evoke a bearable volume of it’s peal.
