Club Events and Committee Announcements
Shauna Naf provided additional information about our upcoming major Club fundraiser, “Mountainfilm”.  What is it about?  Documentary films compete in film festivals.  From this competition, the best are selected and they go on tour.  That tour is coming to Bellingham.  Mountainfilm “inspires audiences to create a better world.”  Our club is going to sponsor the local event as a fundraiser.  It is to be held in the Syre Theater on November 16th at 7:15 pm.  Doors open at 6 pm.  It lasts for 2 hours and 45 minutes.  Tickets are $25.  It will be a fundraiser to support our Club.  Food and beverages (and a raffle) are available for purchase.  Shauna encouraged members to sign up their household, volunteer to work at the event, indicate you plan to attend on Facebook, invite friends, help sponsor the event (or find sponsors) put up a flyer, help bake goods for the event and more.  Here is the link for information and ticket purchases or  contact Shauna for more information.

Scott Herman announced a program with the District:  The Youth Engaged in Service (YES) program is a year-long program for students entering the 11th grade. The program focuses on leadership training and volunteerism and culminates at the end of the school year with an international service project.

Please announce to your club that the application is live for the 2024-2025 YES team at Home Page | Youth Engaged in Service (yes5050.org) .

They are also looking for Rotary Club members to join our committee an ensuring this program continues in the future.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at bernadette@archerhalliday.com.

Tom Grinstad received the following letter from the Copan student the club sponsors. The google translation is as follows:
Hello, nice to meet you, it's a pleasure to greet you.
I hope you are doing great, and I hope everything goes well for you.
Well, the reason for this letter is so that you can know more about me. I am a very studious girl, I make a good effort to get good grades, I have academic excellence and so far everything has gone well for me, thank God. I am in eighth grade.
I hope to continue counting on your support since my parents do not have the necessary resources for me to continue studying, but first God, with your help, I will be able to fulfill my dreams and goals.
Blessings and thank you.

Book Review
presented by Shauna Naf
Shauna Naf had another busy day as she also provided a book review of the book, “Strength Finder 2.0”.

Strengths Finder 2.0 by Tom Rath is a guide to identifying and maximizing your unique strengths. The book offers a customized tool for assessing and enhancing your abilities, helping you excel in your personal and professional life.

The book argues that we should forget about fixing our weaknesses and go all in on our strengths instead by showing ways to figure out which 5 key strengths are an innate part of you.  It then gives you advice on how to use these strengths in your life and work.

The following are the character types (and strengths) described by Rath:
  • Believer: Believers thrive when they feel they have a higher calling or something to believe in.
  • Futurists: Futurists are highly skilled at imagining the future and guessing where the culture is headed. Their greatest strengths are seeing beyond current boundaries and rules and anticipating changes.
  • Achievers: Achievers are motivated to be the best, no matter what the task is.
  • Commanders: Commanders aren’t afraid to speak their mind, and they will stand up for their point of view in almost any situation. They have strong opinions and generally a good moral compass. Their greatest talent is cutting through debate and mobilizing a group to get things done.
  • Harmonizer: Harmonizers seek out compromise, always trying to find the most diplomatic solution to a conflict. They tend to enjoy talking to people and hearing their opinions. They tend to be good at negotiating delicate situations and ensuring that the greatest number of people go away relatively happy.
  • Responsible: Responsibles take pride in their work and are always sure to fulfill their roles to the best of their abilities.

From reading the book, Shauna spoke about how she was able to do her own assessments to identify her strengths - and what you can do as a follow up.

Rebound Families
Our program speaker was Keri Smith Executive Director of the non-profit organization - “Rebound Families”.

Rebound Families works with families trying to recover and rebuild after experiencing the effects of trauma.

She noted that families often suffer because of a lack of connection. Social isolation and lack of support from other adults make it difficult for families to gain traction during crises. Rebound seeks to foster supportive relationships and access community help.  The organization attempts to give families the tools they need to succeed and offers year-round programs for parents and kids that teach health in life's social, emotional, and physical areas.

Rebound offers several programs.  They include a  program it calls “Roots” that runs for eight weeks, three quarters per year. The program is specifically designed for families facing challenging life circumstances and parents wanting to develop family-building skills.  It provides parenting classes, classes for kids.

It also provides advocacy for families with social agencies, community based services and the legal system.

Rebound also provides a summer camp, “Ray of Hope” that serves elementary school-age children who have experienced difficult life circumstances and exhibit emotional & behavioral issues which prevents them from assimilating into more traditional summer camps.

Closing:  President Steve closed the meeting by thanking those that helped make the meeting possible.
