Teri welcomed visiting Rotarian James Courtney from the Mount Vernon Rotary club and had a long list of announcements befitting the active club that we are.  Teri reminded the membership that website sponsorships are still available for $300. Benefits include your ad rotating on our home page and a link to your business website. Teri also welcomed future club member Felicity Dye and reminded us that the next new member breakfast is on July 31, 7:00-7:45 am, at the Bellwether.

Announcements:

Board Briefs – July 13, 2017 meeting:
Rotarian Rud Bowne attended the Board meeting to present a new Rotary project.  In attempting to work with Northwest Youth Services to connect homeless youth with the agriculture community for jobs he unveiled a consistent obstacle.  Many of the homeless population have lost, had stolen or do not have proper ID to get jobs, etc.

He explained how our society manages to make it difficult to impossible for many people to obtain access to, ad participate in the most basic aspects of life.

He estimates that there are between 100-200 homeless youth and between 700-800 total homeless in Whatcom County
.
He is proposing that we have multiple Rotarians to aid the students to retrieve the information needed to get their ID, i.e. find high school yearbook photo’s
He envisions that in tracking this information down we could contact other Rotary Clubs in the persons hometown to aid in getting this difficult information from high schools, etc.

He is also looking for funding as he estimates out-of-pocket cost to acquire/re-acquire valid “Stand Alone” ID for a homeless person is between $153 to $207 per person.

He was encouraged to look into this further.

New Membership proposal for Felicity E. Dye proposed by Monty McAllister & Dominique Zervas to fill the classification “Telecommunications” was approved by the Classification Committee and the Board of Directors.  Unless written objection is received by Sandee Lindhout, 2200 Vining St., Bellingham, Wa. 98229 by July 24th she will be eligible for membership July 25th.

The Board wants to see proposals and inductions be expedited so we will start notifying the membership by email after their approval instead of waiting until the next Tattler is sent out.

Treasurer, John Holtzheimer, presented the 2016-2017 Year End Financial Report
He also presented the 2017-2018 Budget and it was approved by the Board

President Teri Treat explained her new Committee Structure & Assignments.  Chairman are selecting their own committee members this year and the chairman are asked to inform her and Sandee their committee names.

She also reported that Board members will no longer track monthly their various committees and report to the board.  The committee will report to the membership when they have something to report.  Chairman are encouraged to contact Sandee or herself for announcement time.

Monty McAllister reported that our outgoing student, Issy Cybula will be leaving in two weeks.  Our incoming student, Ivanna Platt from Hermosillo, Mexico,  will be arriving soon also.

The next Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for Thursday, August 10, 2017 at 4:30 at the Dorothy Haggen Building, floor 3

The first Rotary Rally will be on Saturday, August 12 beginning at 4:00 PM.  This will be a fun event, requiring a driver and a navigator and will end with a social gathering.  You don’t need a sports car to participate.  Nathan Twining is coordinating this event.

On a more somber note, Teri let us know that, club member Roger Barnhart is moving into Silverado Memory Care Community at 4400 Columbine Dr., Bellingham in the Cordata area.  Nancy emailed Sandee and said he is ready for visitors and that morning or afternoon are the best  times. Also Brad and Sharie Burdick had a house fire over the weekend. Both Brad and Sharie were unhurt but their house has major damage.

Del VandeKerk, District 5050 Assistant Governor, reminded us that 57 clubs in Washington and British Columbia make up District 5050 which offers a variety of trainings and seminars for club members. Del will be publishing dates of District 5050 events in the tattler including GolFun, a fundraiser to support End Polio Now. Del reported that we have one team signed up for the tournament on August 18 at the Homestead Golf and Country Club but that we hope to have two.

Guests of Rotarians:

Monty McAllister brought Felicity Dye
Presentations:
Jack Westford provided a Frank C. Brooks Take A Vet To Lunch Committee report (Frank C. Brooks is a decorated WWII Vet and past club President.) Jack, and his co-chair John Huntley and his committee members are dedicated to helping vets find work. The project partners with WorkSource and includes inviting a Vet to lunch at one of our club meetings. He called on the entire membership to think of ways to help Vets find work.

Monty McAllister introduced, Izzy Cybula (Isabelle), our first outbound Rotary International Youth Exchange student since 9/11.  Izzy told us that she will be heading to Leer Germany on July 25 and has been preparing for her visit by communicating frequently with her host family who say that Leer has lots of cold and rainy weather like Bellingham and that they also have really great tea. She also prepared by attending a District 5050 gathering of fellow exchange students where she was able to take the RCOB flag around with her. She has also been studying German and researching things about the culture and day to day things like what to pack for her visit! Her exchange is a joint project between RCOB and the Bellingham Bay Club. Follow Izzy’s adventure at izzydeutschland.blogspot.com

Program:

Recreation Northwest Executive Director Todd Ellsworth gave the presentation for the day. Todd returned to Bellingham after 10 years of travel and career development in the recreation industry. Upon his return, he founded the Bellingham Traverse in 2002 to celebrate the life of wild salmon as an extension of his community values and personal interests. In 2013, Todd co-founded Recreation Northwest to support the expanding Northwest Traverse Series and create valuable programming and events to activate our population. Recreation Northwest’s mission is to promote outdoor recreation and bring people together to enjoy, preserve and improve the places where we play. Todd spoke of their non-profit goals of Fun, Education, and Stewardship.

This year Recreation Northwest is holding its 16th Annual Bellingham Traverse that leads participants on a trail designed to showcase the parks and greenspaces that make Bellingham great. The course is designed for solo contestants but there is a division for corporate teams as well. One of Recreation Northwest’s goals is economic development through the recreation industry. Towards that goal Todd shared that this year was the 4th year for the RN Expo in partnership with Bellingham Tourism showcasing local races. 1800 people attended. There were 65 exhibits at the expo from 51 cities. The Expo was free to the public. They also sponsored their first statewide Outdoor Recreation Summit with two keynote speakers and 100 attendees from 7 counties. The focus was recreational growth and development in rural communities.

Other projects RN is stewarding include building two trails connecting Fairhaven Park with the Fairhaven trail system. Todd will be giving guided tours of the trail system on July 23 and August 27. One of their newer projects is Parkscriptions, a program in partnership with the Family Care Network physicians who are writing prescriptions for patients to get outside. RN has a website that you can go to find recreation opportunities close to your home. Parkscripitions is a project made possible through a Whatcom Community Foundation Grant. If you want to support Recreation Northwest, Todd invited all to attend the November Breakfast of Champions fundraiser in November.

President Teri ended the meeting with happy bucks, drawing the winning raffle ticket, and a solid strike to the bell.
