Opening
We were welcomed before the official meeting by the mellifluous sounds of the mighty Rotary Club of Bellingham ukulele orchestra. This group consists of club members plus Judy Coons and Rick Wright (a former member, who has time for playing a shrunken geetar, but not for us).
President Teri welcomed us to the Rotary Club of Bellingham and thanked all who participated in the Memorial Day Parade.

We must get more members involved, maybe a marching kazoo band??

  • Michael K. Mischaikow Memorial Scholarship presented by Cathy Buckley.  The Michael K. Mischaikow Memorial Scholarship honors former Rotarian and Western Washington University professor Michael K. Mischaikow. Mike originally started an endowment fund at the Foundation to encourage Bellingham Rotarians to assist Russia in its transition to a free democratic society. About three years ago, the Mischaikow family generously agreed to increase the endowment and convert its purpose to scholarship. This award is for an excellent student who is first generation of a foreign-born parent, demonstrating scholastic financial need. Whatcom Dollars for Scholars selected the winner from an identity blind application process

    • The Michael K. Mischaikow Memorial Scholarship was presented to Abigail Ryan from Meridian High School.  Abigail plans on attending Gonzaga in the fall to study public relations, law and public policy.  Her future plans include potentially attending law school.
  • Phil Millard Memorial Athletic Scholarship presented by Cathy Buckley.  The Phil Millard Memorial Athletic Scholarship was instituted in November of 1982 by the Rotary Club of Bellingham to honor the memory of Rotarian son, Phil Millard, who died on October 31, 1982, after suffering injuries in the traditional football game between Sehome and Bellingham High Schools.  The scholarship total $2,000 for each student.  The Millard family has also generously assured that the scholarships in Phil's honor will now continue into perpetuity.   High School Counselors select these awardees, and they may use their award at any school of their choosing.
    • Lauren Dodge from Sehome High School plans on attending Baylor University to study political science at the honors college.  Lauren enjoyed playing fast pitched softball during her school career.
    • Brahm vanWoerden from Bellingham High School will attend Western Washington University and study linguistics in the honor program.  Brahm enjoyed playing football, wrestling and running track while in high school.
    • Chalae Wolters from Squalicum High School will attend Western Washington University where she will play basketball and pursue a career as a Spanish teacher.  Chalae enjoyed volleyball, basketball and track while in high school.
  • Rotary Club of Bellingham Scholarships presented by Gary Goldfogel.  Creating this fund was the Club's Major Project of 2011-2012 and is the current very successful Major Project for our 100th anniversary this year. Administered by Whatcom Community Foundation through their Whatcom Dollars for Scholars picks the annual awardees to meet criteria established by RCOBF.  Awardees choose where they will use their scholarship.  We currently offer 10 new scholarships and 3 that are renewable for a second year for $2,000 each to the institute of their choice.  Any high school/home school senior in Whatcom County is eligible.
    • Hailey Peterson from Sehome High School will attend the University of Washington in the fall and plans on studying premed.  She will also play viola in the UW Orchestra.
    • Erika Singh-Cundy from Sehome High School will begin her college career at Western Washington University and hopes to transfer to University of Washington.  A self-described “math nerd”, Erika will study math and business with the goal of getting her PhD in quantitative finance.  Erika will also participate in WWU’s equestrian team.
    • Brooke DeBeeld from Nooksack Valley High School will attend Western Washington University and looks forward to studying accounting in WWU’s honors program.
