Daver Morse PHF +1                     John Moffat & Daver Morse
           presentation

May 8, 2023
Opening Welcome:

President Paul opened the meeting by welcoming all the new faces (friends and family of DC and Daver Morse and the Blythe family) on hand for Daver’s presentation on the history of Blythe Mechanical, Inc.  Paul commented Daver’s presentation was consistent with how Rotary began – with members talking about their businesses.

Paul noted that the photos that were showing during lunch were from the District 5050 conference last weekend.  The District conference was the second one he had attended.  Many attendees said the conference was the best ever.  The conference took on some tough issues (e.g., promoting peace, promoting inclusion).  The speakers were living the issues (people in wheelchairs, people with difficult backgrounds, etc.).  One new Rotarian at the conference just turned 100 years old.  Another was a third grader who started an “Earlyact” club with 25 classmates at school.  Paul gave a shout out to next year’s District conference, May 3-5, 2024, in Mount Vernon.  Price will be very reasonable, just $100.

Club and Committee Announcements:

John Dunne announced that the Opportunity Council no longer needed bedding.  They are only taking furniture.

Marty Haines announced that the annual Rotary cruise will be on June 19, so Save the Date!  We will be traveling to Sucia Island with San Juan Cruises. Marty commented that several yacht clubs banded together and purchased Sucia Island in the 1960s and turned it over to the state to be a park.  Cost will be $110 per person which includes lunch.

Shauna Naf announced that Applebee’s will be taking a group photo next Monday, May 15, at our meeting.  We are all encouraged to wear Rotary garb.

If you have a special committee you would like to be assigned to, please contact Doug or Sandee.

Mark Knittel:  Director
President Paul asked Mark and Ward to evaluate if we should continue offering Zoom as an option to join meetings based on the time that is involved weekly.  After looking at the pros and cons it was determined that we would continue for ease of members who are traveling or simply unable to attend but want to stay connected.

Mark reported that the AV committee would like to have 1-2 additional members that can be trained to set-up the involved system at WCC.  Please let Mark or Ward know if you are interested in helping.

He is also recommending that we encourage expectations of members to participate in 1-2 hands on projects yearly.

WE MOVED TO THE SYRE STUDENT CENTER -  SYRE THEATER AT WHATCOM COMMUNITY COLLEGE.     HERE ARE THE DIRECTIONS.

The buildings address is 235  W Kellogg Rd. But this is not where you park. There is no parking off of Kellogg Road. You must enter parking off either Eliza Ave or Cordata Parkway. You are looking for the YELLOW lot (look on light poles for Y2 or Y3).
Enter from Eliza Ave: the driveway between Kellogg Rd and Westerly Rd has a driveway into the campus, follow that about 200 yards until it slopes down, park in the area between the three buildings.
Enter from Cordata Parkway: Just north of the WTA station and Cruisin Coffee before the round about is Orca Lane, take Orca Lane around the first two buildings until you find a large parking lot between three buildings.

Program

Program Chair-Elect John Moffat introduced club member Daver Morse, president of Blythe Mechanical as today’s speaker.

Daver gave a brief history of the company.  It was started in 1904 as Christopher and Co. plumbing.  Arthur J. Blythe began working for Christopher, and soon became part owner (Dupar-Blythe Plumbing and Heating) and later became sole owner under the renamed A.J. Blythe Plumbing and Heating.  The business remained in the Blythe family for two generations.  In 1974 D.C. Morse left Morse Hardware and got involved with Blythe.  Around that time, Blythe got involved in fiberglass pipe fabrication.  Ershigs manufactured fiberglass pipe and subcontracted with Blythe to fabricate piping assemblies.

In 2003, Daver and his partners bought the company from his father.  Since then, there has been significant revenue growth, which has followed the company’s expansion into design-build.  Dave said the business model has been to build the product offsite at its 40,000 square foot fabrication facility on West Illinois Street, and then assemble it onsite.  Daver showed a number of photos of the facility and various parts of the facility, including assembled ductwork and piping.

Daver went through photos of many of the important and well-known projects that Blythe has worked on over the past 8 decades, contributing to our community:  construction of Bellingham High School in 1938; Work on Bellingham Shipyard in the 1940s-1960s; much work on Bellingham Cold Storage; all three of the Bellingham Housing projects (Lincoln Square, Chuckanut Square and Washington Square); the Uniflite Vietnam Patrol boat piping; Semiahmoo Hotel in the mid-1980s; the Lummi Nation Administration Building (the first geothermal building in the county); Angel of the Winds casino and hotel expansion; NAS Whidbey Hospital; Maberry Packing; Mount Vernon School District; Mount Vernon High School; Anacortes High School; and the Lummi K-12 school in 2004.

Daver thanked his parents (D.C. Morse and Jan Marchbanks)and his uncle, Bob Morse, for being so supportive in many aspects of the business.  Additionally, he thanked the Blythe family for all their work and contributions to the community.

Closing:

Final Announcements:  Paul thanked Daver for his presentation, and thanked him and D.C. for their contributions to the community.  Paul thanked all who helped put on the meeting, and urged everyone to pitch in to leave the room as we found it.
