Michael K. Mischaikow International Service Award:
A major club award, the Michael K. Mischaikow International Service Award was presented to Sue Parsons by Scott Herman.
She earned the award for mighty efforts in the student exchange program, where she has become substitute mom for the international students. She helps prepare the American students for their foreign assignments and conversely helps the foreign students adapt to our way of doing things.

Then our soon=to-be ex-leader John said a blessedly few words about the past Rotary year. He of course thanked the officers and directors for their steadfast work. He noted many of the accomplishments the meal packing event, and the Skookum Kids project leading the list. And he shamed the rest of us as the three newest members of the club were sponsored by him. C’mon people, can’t we do better? How can we allow the now ex-president to show us up?
Ex-pres. John then gave the oath of office to New President Nathan Twining. It was then John’s turn to be roasted. Steve Ban inducted John into the Past Presidents’ Club. It was a gentle roast, and the attending ex-presidents seemed reluctant to affirm the new guy’s induction, but it happened.
Steve then introduced the new president Nathan for his remarks. Nathan had obviously thought about what he was going to say. In a tightly reasoned and easily followed talk he pointed us in the direction he sees for the club. And he said, “…my focus is on you, our current members. If our own members aren’t having a great experience and seeing value in our club, why would we expect new members to?” And Nathan will judge how successful his term in office is by the joy we find in the club. If the members are happy then the club is happy – if I can simplify.
He wants to make the meetings resulting in thoughts like: “I’m glad I came.” Not just another item to check off the calendar. He wants to add variety to the meetings – maybe have the meeting go to the community. And he will be asking members for ideas to accomplish these.
Second emphasis for Nathan is respecting time. He will concentrate on starting and stopping on time, keeping segments from running long. Welcome new people, maybe recruit others who have lapsed attendance. Make it “feel like they belong to this club, that this club reflects their values, and that it’s a good use of their time and treasures.”
Thirdly, Nathan wants to strengthen local connections. Part of it is PR. We should get more recognition for club achievements. How can we celebrate the work our existing members already do and find new opportunities?
It all comes down to this, in Nathan’s own words, “the first part will be to reflect on what we want our club to be, this year and in the years ahead. Then I want to implement that; I want a few realistic, quantifiable changes we can make to improve our club. I want to add a little more emphasis on our existing members and our experiences, I want our members to take ownership and pride in this club, and I want us to be prominent in our local community.”
Closing
And after ringing the bell for adjournment, there were no tables to move or chairs to store. A good start to the year.
