Ward Naf again reminded members of the May 17th Sunnyland Memorial park project and also indicated the committee was looking at a project in Fairhaven.  More information to follow.

He also encouraged members consider supporting Bellingham Bay’s Grapes and Gourmet event.  The event is being held on April 19, 2025 from 4- 8 pm at the Hotel Bellwether ballroom.

Preparing for new Rotary Year 2025-2026:

Incoming Program Chair, George Halsell, told members that he thought there were a lot of interesting topics and stories that could be told by members and urged members to contact him if you were interested in being a speaker for one of our programs in the coming Rotary year.

Incoming President John Moffat told us he was hoping to staff committees with the existing members and chairs and to contact him if you had questions.

Rotary Board of Directors Board Briefs March 20, 2025
Roland Trenouth requested a $200 donation to the Assumption church for the use of their gym for meal packing, which was approved.

The board discussed reaching out to the inactive members to understand why they are not attending meetings.  They will send emails followed by phone calls to these members, asking for their input on how to improve the club.  They agree this outreach is a worthwhile exercise to gather information and potentially improve club engagement.

Sandee Lindhout reported a phone call from the Gambling Commission, that they have discovered an error that has been going on for years.  They should not have issued the RCOB a gambling license because we are not a 501c3. The club is a 501c4.  We have had our license for also 30 years.  That means, effective June 30, 2025, we must stop all our 50/50 raffles at meetings.  Nathan Twining will investigate our options.  Shauna mentioned that we could switch to an Auction for MountainFilm.

The Rotary Epic Day of Service is May 17th.  We will be doing the Sunnyland Memorial Day Clean-up in conjunction with the City of Bellingham from 9-12:00.

John reported that Catherine Riordan and he attended the District Grants Training, so the club is fully qualified to apply for any grant.

Membership satisfaction survey results and membership table discussions March 10, 2025:

Here is the link for the survey results: https://www.jotform.com/report/25024907410104225

Catherine led the discussion stating “Let’s Do Something” quoting Teri Treat.  She suggested we explore what we could do without too much difficulty and immediately and that we should prioritize them.

Nathan suggested we prioritize 2-3 items to focus on and make a deadline.

The Committee discussed potential venues for our meetings, considering factors such as food availability, accessibility and AV set-up.  Ward Naf’s input would be critical.  They explored the possibility of using a church or synagogue’s social hall, and the idea of ordering sandwiches from a restaurant.  The committee also discussed the need for a venue committee to investigate these options further.  Sandee reminded members that we are allowed to bring food to the WCC location and have it catered.  Cathy Buckley and Sandee Lindhout have agreed to sit on the committee.  An announcement will be made to the membership, looking for a chairman and other members.

To start with we will cancel our regular WCC meeting at noon on May 12th and hold a late afternoon or evening meeting with the location to be determined by the Social Committee, Chaired by Catherine Riordan.  It was suggested we do whatever business is needed and then socialize or hold discussions like the future of the club.  Members will be encouraged to invite guests.

Sandee also noted that we have already added to the agenda an area for the membership to make general comments or announcements.

Rotary Brass will play twice per month and 1 will be patriotic

John Moffat and Catherine Riordan will look at the current meeting format.

Rotary Youth Exchange Program Update
By Scott Herman

Scott did a presentation on our Rotary Youth Exchange program.

He returned, with Felicity, from a conference in Mexico on Rotary Youth exchange. While there, he met our former exchange student from the period of 1992-93, Sylvia Heredia, who lived with D.C. and Jan Morse.  He also talked about our current outbound exchange student, Dawnlyn Chadwick, who was also off to Mexico and updated us on Reece Carpenter who is off to Trieste, Italy.

Scott talked about our RCOB sponsored Interact Club at Sehome High School.  It now has 18 students.  Several are signed up for our meal packing event. They are doing a tree planting event with the Squalicum Interact Club and sponsoring students in Honduras.

Scott informed us that we have an incoming exchange student from Hungary, Janka, who is sponsored by our club.  There are currently no outbound exchange students scheduled for the coming year and the committee is planning on working with counselors and language teachers at the different high schools to encourage students to consider the Rotary exchange program.

The committee is looking for members to serve as host families.

Lastly, the International Trivia Night is coming on May 15th.  It will held at Goods Local Brews from 5-9 pm at 2620 Northwest Avenue.  It will feature Ethiopian, Japanese, Spanish and French food.

Rumbi

A special moment of the meeting was to discover that Rumbi, our former exchange student from Africa was attending by zoom.  President Steve and his wife Jan recently traveled to Africa to meet her.  She is currently in college in Cape Town and thinking of graduate school. A number of members offered happy bucks in fond memories of her.

MAIN PROGRAM:
Genevieve Whelan
ACS WA Teen of Impact
Our speaker today was Genevieve Whelan, a sophomore at Squalicum High School.  Going back prior to the fifth grade, she has been involved in heart health - much if in support of the American Heart Association as a “teen of impact”.  Her goal is to go the Air Force Academy and become a neurosurgeon.

She explained why she was so involved in heart issues stating, “This organization holds a special place in my heart due to its critical role in supporting families like mine who have been deeply affected by heart disease and stroke.”  She explained, “Both of my paternal grandparents tragically passed away from heart attacks, and my maternal grandfather has survived thanks to the lifesaving efforts of the AHA, as he now lives with 17 stents in his heart. My maternal grandmother has had a stroke, and my great aunt and uncle have both undergone open-heart surgery. My uncle and aunt both had open-heart transplant surgeries. “

As a “teen of impact”, she had gone to the Washington State legislature and lobbied upon behalf of new legislation. She noted that heart issues are the number one cause of death for women.  One out of three women experience some kind of heart issue.

Her efforts in support of heart health include using social media to reach out to people (especially teens), hosting events, meeting with youth and other teens in the community and presenting to organizations like Rotary.

She closed her presentation by urging members to support the American Heart Association.
