Program:
Our program was by RCOB member Dick Tucker titled, “Conquering Major Mountains of the World.” Dick’s first major climb was Mt. Baker, 10,781’. This was so much fun that he set out to conquer a few more. On the African continent, 19,341’Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania was next, which he labeled, “Most Cultural.” 20,310’ Denali in Alaska followed and Dick labeled it, “Prettiest.” 19,347’ Cotopaxi in Ecuador was next and will not be repeated as the summit was eliminated by an eruption in 2015. Next was 22,841’ Aconcagua in Argentina, the tallest in the Western hemisphere. 18,510’ Elbrus in Russia was “the most politically interesting and took two tries as the first attempt was abandoned due to weather.
Vinson Massif, 16,050’ in Antarctica was the “most unique” due to the most un-earthlike terrain. Because there is no liquid water, there is no life. The average temperature is -20F. He would like to do it again! The Grand Paradiso in Italy, 13,323’, was the most fun. Dick has since climbed Mt. Baker numerous times, including leading a group of Rotarians to the summit in July of 2010. He also showed pictures of an ascent of Mt. Shuksan and winter ice climbing near Ouray, Colorado.
Dick started climbing because sailing wasn't athletic enough...
