Board Briefs from July 14, 2015 meeting:

President Chuck Snyder reported that we are waiting for the District final results on the survey.
He also reported that the phone survey was very helpful in assigning committees and he got good ideas for the 100th Anniversary celebration.  He is still accumulating the results.

Chuck explained that the Service Fund Committee confirmed that they want to donate the additional $400 to the NW Innovation Resource Center and it was approved unanimously by the Board.  An additional request will be made to the RCOB Foundation.

We discussed where the proceeds from Wacky Wickets will go with no final decision.  Left over proceeds will go towards this year’s expenditures and carried forward in the amount of $3,487.56.

He mentioned that he came across a “hand on project” at the R. I. Convention that he would like to follow-up on and can see it as a County Wide Rotary Project in the fall.  It is called “Stop Hunger Now”.  Rotarians package meals to distribute around the world.  This is being studied further.

President Chuck would like to hold one or two Club Assemblies this year.  A date of November 9th has been selected and the Board is working on selection of topics.

The June 30, 2015 Month and Year End Financial Reports were approved.   John Holtzheimer, Treasurer, reported we ended up with a surplus of $218.07 and had budgeted a deficit of $669.54.

Mark Knittel has created an area under out "For Our Members" area on the home page that now will show the monthly financial reports within "Member Information, Committees".  Check it out.  Thanks Mark!!

There are two large items that have been donated to the ebay fund: a Yamaha keyboard and a large dog kennel. It would be easier and cheaper to sell them locally. If anyone is interested, or knows of someone who may be interested, please contact Del.

R. I Foundation Committee – Margaret Curtis Chairman
It is paramount that Club Members appreciate the value and difference between The Rotary Foundation (i.e. Rotary International), and our own Club's so similarly named Rotary Club of Bellingham Foundation.  The Committee will strive to do this.

International Service Committee – Paul Grey and Bob Trunek Co-Chairs
The big event this month was our visit to Uganda (Dominique Zervas, Lisa Saar and Bob Trunek) in late June and early July.

We hosted a welcome dinner in Kampala with 13 members of our partner Rotary Club on Friday evening, travelled to Buffujja on Saturday (a full long day) to visit the site of our project where we were treated to a large group lunch with native entertainment and speeches.  This was the highlight of the trip.

Sunday evening we joined our hosts at a native cultural center for a cultural entertainment.

Monday morning we met with a representative of the Vetiver Network and Peter Kasango and the local Rotary president.

Later that week Dominique and Lisa attended a joint meeting of five Kampala Rotary clubs.

We also spent some time discussing possibilities for another project with a water focus with the same Rotary Club of Bweogerere-Namboole, and we will be developing the next project over the next several months.

Presentations:

  1. The Michael Mischaikow International Service Award is awarded annually to a Club member who lives as an example of the path set by Michael throughout his own life, working tirelessly in projects that further international understanding and peace. Bob Trunek presented this year’s award to Dominique Zervas.
  2. Kathy Hughes announced the 2015-1016 Major Project. This year, the major project will support the Bellingham Theater Guild, an 86-year-old Bellingham institution. The Guild is a 100% volunteer-run organization, and a vital part of Bellingham’s vibrant arts scene. The Guild benefits from over 25,000 hours each year of community volunteer support. The money raised will go toward an elevator and elevator tower, which will make performances accessible to a population of our citizens who cannot currently attend performances. The community has already raised $400,000 for this project, and there is a matching grant challenge of $200,000 - $250,000 from the Murdoch Trust, if the community can reach $500,000. Therefore, the Club’s contribution would actually be able to leverage an amount much greater than the $100,000 we hope to raise.
  3. Mike Meggysey and John Moffat received their 4 Way Test and Membership Certificates after completing their membership requirements.
Program:  (Faithlife: Growing a Silicon Valley Business in Bellingham)

Teri Treat introduced our program, Bob Pritchett of Faithlife (formerly Logos). Bob worked at Microsoft for a number of years. In 1991, he and one other Microsoft employee started working on a searchable Bible software program, which they eventually called “Logos.” By 1992, the two decided to leave Microsoft and work on Logos full-time. With start-up funding from family, they devoted themselves to developing the company.
What is Bible software? Unlike other books, which are read from front to back, Bibles are oftn used non-linearly; they are often read for passages that are found throughout the book. Pastors preparing sermons, seminary students, and others needed a way to find passages on similar themes that appear throughout the Bible. Logos software sought to make such searches easier. As Bob remarked, “what Excel is to an accountant, Bible software is to pastors, seminary students, and other scholars of religious writings.”
The company started in Kirkland, and then moved to Oak Harbor. Bob saw the limitations of Oak Harbor as a place where the company could grow, and started looking around the area. He thought Bellingham, a medium-sized city with an educated population, nearby world-class cities, and abundant natural beauty, was a natural fit. Logos relocated to Bellingham in 2002 with 45 employees. It now employees 450. The average age of its employees is 33.
Logos recently changed its name to Faithlife to reflect the changing nature of their business. They are not just compiling / sorting existing Bibles and religious writings any more, but are creating original content also, including paper media. Logos is one brand under a much bigger corporate umbrella. Faithlife is now a platform for people’s faith life in the digital world.
Faithlife is consistently recognized as a great employer. They are second only to Boeing in the number of WWU alumni that they hire each year (more than Microsoft). Faithlife has achieved 21% growth each year over a decade, and Bob believes the future looks brighter.
Bob ended his program talking about his strong belief in Bellingham. The geography and natural beautiful are obvious pluses, along with being so near Vancouver and Seattle. He does think that the Bellingham Airport needs a direct connection to a true hub city for Bellingham to realize its full potential. Bob believes we have a vibrant downtown that is starting to get more energy, but we need more people moving downtown. He believes we also need the local government to encourage and allow development in the core, so we can have a true, urbanist community. Bob and his wife are planning to gut-remodel an old hotel downtown, developing it into a mixed-use building, and then move into it themselves.
Bob then took a few questions from Club members.
