Rotation Day
Dale Rings announced the upcoming Rotation Day, scheduled for November 24 with Rotary members meeting in several different local organizations for small group learning and interaction.

Major Project
Chair of the Major Project Committee, Kathy Hughes, recapped the process of how the major project selection is accomplished and determined by the committee.  She said that all on the committee felt very good about this year’s project selection.

This year the project will support a local non-profit called Sun Community Services, which has been serving community need in Whatcom County since 1973.  The funding is specifically for the Sun House which provides housing and a new start for mentally ill homeless people in our community.

Denise Yorsten, Director of Sun House and Don Yorsten from the organization’s leadership were on hand to share their gratitude to Rotary for being the recipient of funding through our Major Project program.  Denise shared a video of a recent resident of Sun House who had a touching and compelling story of how Sun House helped him to get a new start.  He was able to get on medication to treat his mental illness and take the time necessary to find his own place to live.

Sun House provides up to 90 days of emergency housing for homeless individuals with mental illness or behavioral issues.  The house has nine beds available and provides resources for as many as 60 individuals, each year.

Don described the house as a nice old house that has not had any major repairs done in about 35 years.  The funding from Rotary will provide the opportunity to undertake some overdue renovation and repairs.

In addition to the gift from our club, the committee shared the exciting news that it has been able to secure a collaborative partner to provide matching funds to double the impact of this year’s Rotary gift to our community.  County Executive Jack Louws was present to share that he has made a request of the County Council to provide $100,000 in matching funds for Sun House to do additional repairs and renovations.

Following the announcement of the project Bruce Clawson, representing the campaign fundraising committee, spoke regarding the effort to raise the money for this year’s project.  He told the gathering that all of the members of our club working together can have “collective impact” by stepping up to support this project.  The goal is to have 100% commitment to fully fund the $100,000 goal.  Bruce suggested a new 4-Way Test for the campaign:
  1. Commit to the effort
  2. Make a fair (i.e. equitable) contribution
  3. Make an early pledge
  4. Encourage others to support the project and make a gift.
Spoons
The Ministers of Fun, led by Tom Beaumont, broke out the fun utensils, specifically spoons - and looked for talent among our fellow and highly “balanced” Rotarians (see the photo).

Dewey Desler introduced Whatcom County Executive, Jack Louws and Denise and Don Yorston, Executives with Sun House

Program:

Pam Kuntz, Artistic Director and founder of Kuntz and Company, provided the program for the day.  In addition to her work in leading this troupe, Pam is an instructor of dance at WWU.  Pam began her presentation by sharing how in 2005 she was looking for an outlet for young mothers to tell their stories and express their own joy and growth as mothers.  The result was “The Mom Project” which presented an artistic and theatrical depiction of the stories of mothers through the medium of dance.  The project was so successful that it led to another project the following year called "Curve", which told the stories of women and body image in and through dance.

Pam shared some video of the dance troupe’s performances in the years that followed.  There have been more than eleven different projects/performances since 2007 with a wide array of subject matter.  The Dance Company under Kuntz’s direction has tackled topics that span the human experience from aging to death and dying; from dealing with debilitating disease like MS or Alzheimer’s; from  parenting to this year’s project called “Hide and Seek” which explores how our community cares for (or in some cases fails to care for) our youth.

Pam shared that the work of Kuntz and Company is very collaborative, interactive and reflective of our unique community.  They make an effort to listen and then to express the specific stories of our community.  Sometimes they have been fortunate to have community members impacted by the project’s subject matter as performers in the shows and in other cases they have provided creative consultation as the show is being put together and rehearsed.

The performances of “Hide and Seek” will be at the Firehouse Performing Arts Center for the next two weekends (Oct 17-19 and Oct 24-26).  Tickets for the shows are available and all are welcome to attend.
