February 22, 2021     38th  VIRTUAL MEETING

Pre-Meeting Social Time
Members began joining the Zoom meeting around 12:15 pm for socializing and a chance to hear Rick Haggen’s report on the book Full Moon, Flood Tide: Bill Proctor’s Rainforest, by Bill Proctor and Yvonne Maximchuk. The book chronicles a lifetime of experiences by Billy Proctor, a fisherman who, for years, operated a fishing camp in Echo Bay, British Columbia. Echo Bay is home to a marina on the mainland BC coast east of Port McNeill, an area familiar to some of our Club members. Over his lifetime, Billy has seen many changes in the area, not all of them positive. He reflects on the effects of logging, the decrease in fishing activity and living in the wilderness over a period of many years. Billy has built a museum on his property, where he displays artifacts of the area, fishing equipment and bottles he has collected. The book was especially interesting to Rick since, for years, his family has had a boat house in Shawl Bay, not far from Echo Bay.

Opening Welcome:
President Gary Goldfogel called the 38th Virtual Meeting of the Rotary Club of Bellingham to order at 12:30 pm, with around 50 members and several student guests and parents in attendance. He thanked members for participating in the meeting and, having returned from Arizona a week or so ago, he waxed eloquent about our recent cold and snowy weather.

In recognition of February as Black History Month, we were treated to a new presentation by our Rotary Brass, Lift Every Voice and Sing  (Click Here)

Introduction to Song:  Lift Every Voice and Sing was first written as a poem. Created by James Weldon Johnson, it was performed for the first time by 500 school children in celebration of President Abraham Lincoln's Birthday on February 12, 1900 in Jacksonville, FL. The poem was set to music by Johnson's brother, John Rosamond Johnson, and soon adopted by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) as its official song. Today, Lift Every Voice and Sing is one of the most cherished songs of the African-American Civil Rights Movement and is often referred to as the Black National Anthem.

Club and Committee Announcements
President Gary announced that we will hear a final report soon on the status of our major Club project, the new Max Higbee Center. He noted that the Club’s fundraising goal has been met and expressed appreciation to members for their generosity. He noted also that renovation of the space for the Center is nearing completion.
There were no other committee reports, which was convenient since we had a full program of student presentations yet to come.

Ongoing Announcements

Blood Drive - Steve Ban reported that when you donate blood, they are still testing for and informing you whether or not you have Covid antibodies. He also reported that our blood drive will be open for the entire Rotary year, until June 30, 2021. We are participating, along with the other clubs in our Area G, in a District 5050 challenge against the other District Areas. He is encouraging friends and relatives to join in. Those who can't donate blood can donate plasma. Currently, the W. Bakerview office is the only donation location open in Whatcom County. Click Here for additional information.
The minimum age for donating blood is 16 and those 16 and 17 would need parent’s permission to participate. Rumor has it that you can score a Bloodworks pair of socks for donating!
You may schedule your donation appointment on the flyer in the above link or you can make an appointment by phone. In either case, when you are donating, please tell them that you are donating on behalf of RCOB.

All Rotary meetings will be held Virtually on Zoom until further notice due to Covid-19 social distancing.  You can look for an email from Sandee each week prior to the Monday 12:30 meeting (you can start logging in at 12:00 for short socializing) with the link for that privacy protected meeting.  If you have not done so, please download the Zoom app on your computer (you need a camera and microphone on it), iPad or phone.  There is no cost to you.  If you do not have either, you can also call in.  On the invitation, there are US phone numbers you can call and enter the meeting ID number also indicated on the invitation.

RCOB has now set up a Venmo account for ease in payment of Happy Bucks, Minister of Fun, Dues or donations to the club.  Our account is @RCOB-Bellingham.  If you do not have a Venmo account you can set up an account with your computer then download the app. on your phone (just Google "Venmo" and you will find all the information you need)  You then attach it to a debit or credit card (a fee on your end) or attach to your checking account at no cost.  Payment will be sent directly to the RCOB checking account. When you use it for the first time it may ask you the last 4 digits of the RCOB phone number which is 0282.   Give Sandee a call if you need help.  360-734-5532

Program: Student Recognition Program for Humanities & Theater
The program, introduced by James Pyles, co-chair of our Scholarship Awards Committee, was devoted to recognizing outstanding students from Bellingham’s four high schools in the two categories of Theater and Humanities. Each student was introduced by a Club member and then given an opportunity to make a few remarks.

Bellingham High School
Catherine Riordan introduced Broderick (Brody) Buck and Nigel Naylor.
Brody, recognized for excellence in Theater, has been an actor, instructor and acting coach, both at Bellingham High and with the BAAY (Bellingham Arts Academy for Youth)  organization. He recently directed Beauty and the Beast. His broad interests include roller skate dancing, singing and fund raising for BAAY. Brody hopes to attend college on the East coast, majoring in musical theater. He described briefly the challenges of feeling alone during the pandemic, and doing the college application process on Zoom.

Nigel, recognized for excellence in Humanities, has enthusiastically pursued many interests, including wrestling, music, theater and programs of restorative justice in the community. Nigel has enjoyed playing bass in the school orchestra and serving on the Superintendent’s Advisory Committee. He plans to study law and business in college and then embark on a career where he can effect positive changes in society.

Options High School
Ward Naf introduced Axyl Knox, recognized for excellence in Humanities. Axyl began school in Ferndale and later transferred to Options. Axyl enjoys cooking and the culinary arts and is interested in justice and the law, having participated in the American Bar Association's Law Academy last year. Axyl spoke to how valuable the experience at Options High has been and, after graduation, plans to either attend college or first do a stint with the Job Corps.

Sehome High School
Tom Grinstad introduced Bryanna Finley and Cameron Morrow.
Bryanna, recognized for excellence in Theater, has excelled in academics, is passionate about theater, has been active in school theater productions and now is into Afro-Caribbean dance. Bryanna told us of her experiences cooking and distributing food to community members in need. She also described the strange experience of doing remote auditions as part of her college applications. She will attend Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle in the fall and hopes to develop her skills in theater, in order to bring real-life experiences to the public.

Cameron, recognized for excellence in Humanities, is a talented student with a variety of interests, including creative writing, the arts and wrestling. He also wanted us to know that he can do fancy YoYo tricks and is endowed with unusual physical flexibility, enabling him, for example, to walk while in the lotus yoga position. He plans to study computer science in college because he enjoys the puzzle-like challenges it presents.

Squalicum High School
Stephanie Bowers introduced Gavin Sanghera, Jadelyn Drake and Sydney Tag.
Gavin, recognized for excellence in Humanities, is no stranger to Rotary, having been a Rotaract member for the past two years. He has excelled in academics, been active in
music, track and field and cross country running, and worked as a volunteer in retirement homes. He enjoys reading and plans to pursue college studies in biochemistry. Gavin says being in the Bellingham community has been inspiring and helped develop his interests in science. High school experiences and working in the community have taught him to see the world in different ways.

Sydney, recognized for excellence in Theater, is a take charge sort of person who has been a leader at the Lutherwood camp, in community blood drives and in her school. She has been acting since she was three years old and especially loves musical theater. Sydney related how much she has enjoyed her work in drama at Squalicum and will pursue her interests in theater and zoology at Oregon State.

Jadelyn, also recognized for excellence in Theater, loves musical theater and has been in many productions, acting since the 7th grade and stage managing in high school. In addition to her theater work, she has excelled in academics, been active in school choirs and worked part time. She plans to attend college and hopes to do some game designing. Jadelyn told us she feels the need to reach out; she loves doing something to put a smile on people's faces, even in a serious situation. She treated us to an example of what she means by singing a beautiful song from the show Mary Poppins.

To summarize, we were introduced to an impressive group of young folks from our community, who we expect will go on to do great things. We wish them all the very best.

Local Covid Update:
President Gary reported that the number of Covid patients in St. Joseph Hospital is now down to eight, only one of whom is in the ICU. In anticipation of an expected decrease in Covid cases, the hospital is decreasing the number of beds they reserve for these patients. Our community, as most others, has recently experienced a decreased rate of Covid vaccinations, mostly due to the disruption in vaccine supply attributed to the recent weather problems across the country.
