I could be your child, grandchild or another young person between the ages of 15 and 17 that you know. If so, please encourage them to visit www.YAIL.org to learn more about this valuable camp-style opportunity to meet others their age from District 5050 and develop their leadership skills. The camp is held outside White Rock, B.C. from January 22-24, 2016. Our Club sponsors three students each year; there is no cost to the student. Applications are due by Wednesday, December 30th. Interested students should send a short paragraph about why they would like to attend to Katherine Deets at kdeets@chmelik.com. Nathan Twining shared that the club is looking to nominate three youth. You can read about the event, hear the entertainers, and order tickets at rcob.brownpapertickets.com. The three Rotarians are taking the risk (not the Club) for the event which should net about $8,000 profit for Club projects if it sells out! Joe and Brian will be selling tickets on December 14 as well; buy them here for Christmas and save the handling charges (they take credit cards). Also for sale are 5 program ads for $200 each including 5 tickets; Paula McCandless was the first ad buyer!

New Members Talks: Three new and renewed members shared information about themselves.
Kim Perry shared, in keeping with life changing events (as this was Pearl Harbor Day), three events that influenced her life. The first being that when she was told that “girls don’t have to be good at math” she rose to the challenge and became engaged in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) coursework. The second was recognizing that maybe becoming a veterinarian wasn’t going to work since she did not like to look inside of animals. She went into Ag Education and has been in all levels. The third was her first date with her husband in Seattle when he accompanied her to the top of the space needle and she realized he was afraid of heights but wanted to please her – she had found a keeper. She is a competitive, first born family member that includes work, family, friends, helping the environment and continuing to become better as part of her personal mission.
Matt Dorsch, is a local dentist who migrated to Washington while still in high school from the San Francisco Bay area. With an intent to migrate back to California he found himself for some time in Richmond along the Columbia River, then Seattle where he met his wife and started a family and parlayed an undergraduate degree in Zoology to a graduate degree from the UW. He practiced dentistry in Bellevue for a time and was not quite happy with that location. After being lured to Bellingham he now is a partner in a local dental practice and calls Bellingham his home. It sounds like he is happy with his Bellingham migration, practice and home for his family.
Scott Wallace has been a Rotarian for 35 years. His grandfather was president of Old National Bank and often brought the grand kids together to help them to decide their future. Scott told his grandfather he like to “count money”, this and a love of economics led him to a career in banking. His career included several banking positions, the last as president of U.S. Bank. He has been very active in Junior Achievement. Scott is married to Marge Laidlaw and shared he moved all the offices of US Bank to the downtown building of the Old National Bank to honor where he first met Marge. He hinted at several tidbits of information such as camping on Mt St. Helens on May 18, 1980 (boom!), being a private pilot and having a few boats sink (in very cold water).
