Board Briefs August 20, 2026

The Board determined the September 28th evening meeting location will be the Holiday Inn at the Airport.  Our standard room is not available so we will be in the Chuckanut Room.

The Board held an in-depth discussion on member survey results focused on club format and retention of working members. President Nathan will share the data with the membership at our next Focus Meeting October 5, 2026 followed by a membership’s discussion.

Nathan feels members’ feelings are valuable with a emphasis on our membership.

Mark also reported that he has contacted the Bellingham Food Bank following our recent discussion group meeting to see how the RCOB can help them.  Ward and Mark are meeting with them tomorrow, August 21st.

George brought to the Board an idea from Rotary International for a Brewery Fundraiser for Polio Plus.  George presented a model from the Rotary Club of Evanston Nouveau — partner with a local brewery to develop a branded beer. Beer preferred over wine/whiskey for lower cost barrier and younger audience appeal. George is assigned to contact the Evanston club for details and approach 1–2 Bellingham breweries

The next Board meeting will be CHANGED TO Tuesday, September 15th at 4:30 on Zoom

Special Evening Meeting, August 31st at 5:30 at the Holiday Inn at the Airport we will have our own Greg Grant to be the speaker on his 50 years in RCOB.  There will be alot of surprises, so please sign-up to attend by August 24th at noon.  CLICK HERE TO REGISTER

Films, Food & Beverage and Silent Auction

Chief organizer Shauna Naf announced that every member of the Club needs to help put on this event if it is going to be successful. She handed out a sheet listing the various necessary tasks and asked each of us to fill one out and return it to her. We already have four sponsors, but need more, as well as items for the Silent Auction. Finally, Shauna showed an amazing trailer of the movies to be shown at the event.

MAIN PROGRAM:
JOHN BARKER
Wayfinders - How Pacific Islanders are addressing the Climate Change

Monty McAllister introduced our speaker, John Barker. John is a Professor Emeritus at the University of British Columbia and along with his wife Ann Tijen, spent his career as an Anthropologist in remote places, notably Papua New Guinea.  He has written several books about these endeavors.

His program was titled, “Wayfinders: How Pacific Islanders are Addressing the Climate Crisis,” which was about the 25 or so countries and dependencies which make up the Pacific Islands.  He began by telling how this culture evolved from Taiwan, 3500 years ago, throughout the Pacific Ocean and over time to what are now New Zealand and Hawaii with Tonga as the last surviving Polynesian kingdom. Unlike more recent colonialization seeking conquest, economic gain and seeking to influence culture, the ancients expanded their territory with the concept of “Moana,” the respect of sea and sky as being interconnected.  World War II saw the building of infrastructure and communication and transportation to the outside world.

In recent years, the Pacific Islands have had an outsize influence on climate awareness due to the rise of sea level and weather patterns becoming more severe. They see first -hand the result of over fishing, seabed mining and the impact of over 300 nuclear tests.  The position of Pacific Islanders has changed from the 1980s when they felt like victims, to the 1990s when they became teachers, to the 2000s when they became leaders to the 2020s when they became activists, the latter when Vanuatu pushed the United Nations for action with legally binding obligations to force compliance with global treaties on climate change.

Closing:

President Nathan closed the meeting, inviting the speaker to field questions after.
