EXCHANGE STUDENT UPDATE
by Felicity Dye
Opening Welcome:

President Steve Ban called the membership to attention by striking the Club Bell.

The call to order was followed by Paul Grey’s invocation.

Steve introduced the subject of listening. He quoted from the 12 Rules of Life by Jordan Peterson. One of Peterson’s 12 Rules involves the much-overlooked skill of listening. Steve called our attention to how listening is a learned process that can add knowledge to that we may have already acquired.  Listening is the highest form of wisdom. To truly be open to the listening process requires the listener to ask questions, seek clarification and very important - the understanding of others. It is essential that listening also includes listening to ourselves. There is no doubt, listening is essential in the search for knowledge.

When you listen you learn, and it is this learning that forms the basis of wisdom.

Felicity Dye introduced our returning Exchange Student from Monterrey, Mexico Dawnlynn Chadwick, Keisuke Yamegishi from Nonoichi Ishikawa,Japan who leaves July 7th and Haset McKuria from Bishoftu, Ethiopia on Zoom.  She leaves July 1st

Board Briefs for June 19, 2025

President Steve drew our attention to a Board Meeting Thursday, June 19th. This was the last meeting for retired President Doug Cole and Treasurer Steve Gray. Gratitude was expressed for their service.

A letter of resignation was accepted with regret from Chris Lopez who has moved to Lake Stevens.  He will check into Rotary down there.

John Harris requested a leave of absence due to his increasing demands in taking care of his wife Patricia.

WCC meals will not be available June 23rd, August and September unless we cater.  July options in the Canteen will be limited – no soup available.  We are looking into bringing in sandwich catering for July 14th – stay tuned.  Cost will be $16 for sandwich, pickle and chips.  Please register on the July 14th Clubrunner event by July 11th.

Whatcom Center for Early Learning has invited the club to a garden party to celebrate the RCOB donation to the Blue House July 24th from 5-7.  Please go into Clubrunner and sign up if you plan to attend to assure, they know the numbers to expect.

August 25th meeting will be an evening BBQ at Aaron Booker’s home, again go to Clubrunner and sign-up.

Sandee presented the 2025-2026 Proposed RCOB Foundation budget for the club, and it was approved.  The budget will be sent to the RCOB Foundation for approval.  GOOD NEWS:  One change is to have the Foundation accept raffle weekly funds into Designated Club Account to be used for service grants, etc.  We can collect up to $5,000 per year without a license for the Foundation and no monthly report.  The club can no longer hold a raffle license because it is not a 501c3 agency.

Meeting location conversation continued.
Mark Knittel and Ward Naf attended the meeting to inform the board of their findings and thoughts regarding the potential new meeting locations, Lombardi’s, Holiday Inn at the Airport and Bellingham Country Club, versus WCC as relates to AV.   Lombardi’s has no AV equipment, and the layout is horrible.  The Holiday Inn and the Bellingham Country Club are close to the same, with additional cameras and mics needed if we continue zooming.  The club would need to buy what is called an “Owl” and mics for approximately a total cost of up to $5,000 to continue zoom.  Recently attendance on zoom has been very low.  Doing zoom set-up if not integrated takes a lot of time that Ward will not have for the coming year.
Ward suggested we only have zoom for special meetings, not every meeting if we move.  Another room we could use at WCC is back to Syre Building in the smaller room 107/108 with parking in the back.

They suggested we set up a shuttle at the gate to bring those to the WCC current room who need it.

The other concern with WCC is quality catering for lunch.  It was suggested we try catering in sandwiches and see what happens.  We are looking at different catering options, if you have a suggestion please let Sandee know.

After a lengthy conversation regarding AV concerns at each location, Larry Halgren made an alternative suggestion he has been working on with Bellingham Bay Rotary Club member Jim Haupt.  He is General Manager of the Bellwether Hotel, and they are suggesting a combined meeting with RCOB, Bellingham Bay, Sunrise and the Ferndale Rotary Club to consider merging.   They can put together a cost affective buffet and room.  George Halsell reported that the Ferndale Club has already determined that if they don’t get 10 new members by the end of the coming Rotary year, they will either merge or terminate their club.
Larry offered to organize and contact the other clubs to coordinate such a meeting, maybe in mid-September.  The board gave him a green light to go ahead and look into it.
The meeting was adjourned.
Thanks to Steve Gray for 7 years as RCOB Treasurer

Steve Grays’s dedicated service as Treasurer was personified by trust, confidence, and relief that the finances were always accurate and dependable. Truly with dedicated individuals like Steve, “Many hands make light work.”

MAIN PROGRAM:
Exchange Students Update by Felicity Dye
Nathan Twining introduced Felicity Dye

Felicity Dye introduced the exchange student program and highlighted the challenges faced by African students in participating due to a lack of reciprocal exchange opportunities. She explained the Rotary Youth Exchange's Africa One program, which allows students from Africa to participate without requiring a reciprocal exchange.

Haset McKuria from Ethiopia offer her presentation via Zoom. She leaves Bellingham on July 01. Once the electronic Zoom problems were solved by Mark, the delightful Haset made an excellent presentation. She started her presentation with some interesting photos of her home life in Ethiopia. Haset acknowledged the difficulties of exchange students in Africa. The host family was a subject of major interest for both Haset and Keisuke. It is obvious that both felt great affection for their Bellingham hosts. Haset mentioned a triad of new things experienced in the U.S. that would never be experienced at home “Each experience helped me grow more confident as I stepped out of my comfort zone.” When she first arrived the U.S. she was very picky about food but now enjoy all American food. She especially enjoyed the Rotary Youth Exchange Party on September 19, 2024. She left the party feeling fully connected.

While attending school in Bellingham Haset soon got involved in clubs and sports. She extended thanks to supportive staff and kind teachers. School felt like a second home with so many good memories.  “These experiences changed me in the best way.” She wants other students to have this experience.

“Thank you for your support. I love you.”

Keisuke Yamegishi from Nonoichi, Ishikawa, Japan made his presentation in person. Keisuke departs Bellingham for Japan on July 07. He started his presentation by admitting he was so nervous. He described his time in Bellingham as an amazing time.  I had so much fun here. The first host family was President Steve Ban and his wife. Language was so difficult at first. Sign language was the norm. Gradually Keisuke adapted to language and food. He was grateful to both host families for their excellent food.

Keisuke offered us a visual photo report on his favorite activities. Soccer obviously rates high with this young lad. He delighted in snow boarding at Mt. Baker. Keisuke’s home residence is not far from popular ski areas in Japan. “What did I learn?” He did not anticipate the multiple languages he encountered in Whatcom County. He greatly expanded his English vocabulary, and his speaking has much improved. Now he better knows what he can accomplish. He is grateful for the experience. Keisuke loves the people who live here and will return in the future, perhaps university. “Thank You.”

Dawnlynn Chadwick, our own exchange student, felt her time in Monterey, Mexico was a great experience. She resided with three different families. The first was a large loud family. The second family attended lots of concerts and leaned toward European Spanish dialects. It was a small family with a big house, well educated. She joined the family in attending Catholic mass a few times, the host family father was Roman Catholic. The third host family were Rotarians.

Dawnlynn really enjoyed swimming with dolphins, horseback riding, however there were also times when the exchange was hard. She offered special thanks for the computer the club provided.

Closing:

President Steve graciously thanked our guest speaker and called the meeting to closure.

Haset McKuria from Bishoftu, Ethiopia spoke on zoom
Keisuke Yamegishi from Nonoichi Ishikawa, Japan
