And now for the club’s Major Awards Presentations – for the first time in history (not verified) a majority of the awards went to females!!! This award is the most prestigious award in the Rotary Club of Bellingham. The RCOB donates $1,000 in honor of each recipient to the Rotary Club of Bellingham Foundation.
First was the David C. Morse Community Service Award, presented by Shauna Naf, which was given to a person actively involved in several areas of club service like “Take a Vet to Lunch”, greeters, and the major projects – which this year was funding a portion of the newly renovated Max Higbee Center. This recipient this year for this is Jen Moehl.
The Michael Mischaikow International Service Award was given by Jen Moehl to Felicity Dye. Felicity has been very active for many years in the student exchange program. And to celebrate Felicity’s win former exchange students Carla Serrat from Spain and Rumbi Machiridza from Zimbabwe joined the meeting to offer their accolades and congratulations. Carla managed to arrange firecrackers for the event. Very special.
The Vocational Service Award, named for past president Karen W. Morse, was presented by Brad Burdick to a very deserving Rick Kaiser. Rick has been a great asset in all things tech and patriotic. He has made video and Zoom work for the past 16 months, allowing our virtual meetings to happen with few tech problems.
Finally, the Will J. Griswold Club Service Award was given by Prexy Gary to the person who has kept the club viable for 50 years as Executive Secretary and 5 years working with then Secretary, Brick Carr, prior to his retiring after 35 years as Secretary – Sandee Lindhout. We all understand, at least theoretically, the value of Sandee to the club. She is the institutional memory; one might say the guiding light of the club. She keeps the officers in line and makes sure the club lives up to our ideals. Congratulations Sandee.
Retiring president Gary ended his term remarking on several things. He is the only president to preside over not one in-person meeting. He leaves the office with the club financially sound. We supported the Max Higbee Center renovation above and beyond his hopes. A sad note is that we have lost a net eight members this past year. So, get out and recruit!
Former president Cathy Buckley was able to join in only in bits and starts; her bandwidth made it difficult to understand one word she was saying. So, her roast of Gary will have to wait for the next meeting. That alone should be enough to entice you all to attend F2F July 12 at the Four Points by Sheraton.
Incoming president Peter Theisen thanked Gary for his term of office which was hobbled by the Covid crises. Peter listed a few goals for his year as prexy. Among these were: to return to in-person meetings, restart committee and social activities that have been dormant during the pandemic, build on past successes (international projects, student exchange, major projects), reactivate club members who because of the pandemic and virtual meetings have become inactive, and to be the BEST service club in Bellingham. Maybe District 5050!!!
The new officers and directors are:
President Peter Theisen
President-Elect Paul Grey
V.P. & Program Chair Doug Cole
Treasurer Steve Gray
Past President Gary Goldfogel
New Director Shauna Naf
New Director Felicity Dye
Director Steve Hettick
Director John Pedlow
Gary gave an optimistic Covid report: relatively few hospital cases. Fairly good vaccination response in the area.
And Sandee rang the bell ending the meeting (which even this defective reporter heard).
